    Topic: Templates

I’m not sure if I should have selected to make it a template from the get go but I have a pretty big form I created (22 fields), I am trying to figure out how to use it, in probably slightly modified form, as my circumstance changes (I’m not a db power user but I’m pretty sure I am talking about creating a template). I had a similar form on Bento, I will eventually want to bring all those files over but for now I am learning this program and created a brand new form in Tap Forms. I think part of my problem may be how I open this form – it does not appear in the list of forms at startup, only “Sample Forms” and the folder called “Samples International” is in that list. I created this form/data base on a mid-2010 MBP, this involves sharing limitations (cannot use Airdrop, not that I think that matters in this case). After creating in on the book, it showed up in the list of entities on the list when I would start the program (along with “Sample Forms” and “Samples International). I wanted it to also reside on my (new) iMac, the only way I could see to do this with a custom db was to use the Export Tap Form Archive from the file menu, then once it was exported to my Documents folder on my MBP, I proceeded to copy it to the same folder on my iMac over my home network. Now I am able to use this form on either machine, I think I know how to sync info between them as well, but the problem is this form does not appear in the list when I open the program, on either machine (never did on the iMac), what I have to do is go into Documents and double click on it (or from within Tap Forms, go File/Open or Open Recent); if this was my only problem, that I had to get there in a kinda round about way, this would not be a big issue, but I am not sure this isn’t causing other problems. Let’s call the db that the form I created on the MBP resides in “Rips”, within Rips there is one set of records, let’s call that ABC Company (these are details of trips I do for various motor carriers). When I open the db Rips, in there, in the L pane, there is one entity, ABC Company, with the eleven records I added to it; now, as I am no longer with ABC Company, I want to create another entity for the new motor carrier, let’s call it DEF Company. I want the same fields, the same calculations, everything I had with the entries with ABC Company (I would probably make a minor tweak or three), when I click on DEF Company the click on the “+” to add a new record, I want to see the same fields I had with ABC Company. I’m pretty sure I need to make that from the template for this database, what I’m finding from the help menu in the program is to select the document, then choose File/Get Info (never tried pressilng Command-I as it states as an alternative, but the result should be exactly the same); it then goes on to say to select “Stationery Pad” under General, problem is this is greyed out on both machines. Do I need to figure out how to get that document from my main Documents folder into a different place on my hard drive? (I asked about where work created in Tap Forms is stored in an e-mail to support, but haven’t heard back – why I highlight a different document, such as “Sample Forms” or a template I downloaded, go Get Info and try to follow that path, it does not work). How can I make that form a template for every document (entity in the L pane, such as DEF Company) that I create in this database?

    Hi Helen,

If you email me your Bento backup file I can convert it to .bentoTemplate files for you which you can import into Tap Forms.

Tap Forms 5 however has a more advanced Bento importer that supports more of the field types from Bento, such as the Simple List field type, which is not supported in Tap Forms 3.5.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

    Hi,
I’m testing out the trial version of tap forms (version 3, I have an old OS) and I’m wondering if I can import data from an old bento backup folder? I was using Bento for a long time after it was discontinued, but my laptop was stolen and I can’t run it anymore. It would be great if there was some way of rescuing the data.
    Thanks!

    Hi Graham,

Thanks for trying out Tap Forms. There’s no restrictions in the trial version of Tap Forms. The only thing you needed to do was create a new document and have it opened in the foreground to enable the Import Bento Template command.

    Thanks!

I’m using the demo version of Tap Forms (3/5/20) and can’t import a Bento template. When I go to choose the template, the one I have exported from Bento is duimmed out.

Is this because I’m using the demo version?

    Thanks

I have been forced down the route of using Tap Forms (and learning very quickly) at a very late stage of running an event, due to out of date software problems. So I have transferred my Bento database to Tap forms on an imac, and I have one database with three layouts. I want to use one of the layouts on the ipad, as it contains only certain records, and then synch the databases later with the computer version. I can’t see the layouts on the ipad, only the whole database with all fields. Is there anything I am missing?

    Hi Markus,

Maybe you imported your Bento database into the Finnish Sample Forms document? There’s a separate German Sample Forms document maybe you could import your Bento data into instead.

Do you get errors syncing? Does your second machine have a copy of that document you’re trying to sync? Check the “db-” values on the Sync Settings screen to make sure they’re identical on each device.

    Hi Brendan

    1. I use sample Forms document and there appears the mixture of finnish and german language. Weird eh?
    2. I imported Bento into TapForms and i work now with that imported database/form in tapforms but it does not sync in icloud to my second machine…

    Solution?

    Hi Markus,

You may be loading up the Finish Sample Forms document.

    1. If you don’t want the Finish Sample Forms document, I would suggest going to the Database Documents window, then navigate into the Samples International folder and delete the Finish sample.

    2. What sync service are you currently using for your Bento database import? You should use the Send Document function to send a copy of the document to your MacBook.

See this page in the documentation:

    Hi
I purchased tap forms because Bento has no more updates. I use Tapforms in iclouc sync mode. Two problems so far: 1. Form list on the left side has a mixture of languages in the titles (german and finnish). Where does the finnish come from?
    2. I imported a Bento database, so far so good, but i only have it on the main machine, is not syncing on my notebook.

    I am using MAC.

    Please help. Thanks.

Not sure if it is just my system, or something with database recently imported from Bento, but I see a reproducable display quirk when I do a Find commands and use the “All Forms” option. The symptom is that the contents of the match(es) are sometimes not displayed. I am running with latest Tap Forms 5 from Apple App Store 5.2.11 (Build 894) and using iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) running High Sierra 10.13.4 (17E202), also latest.

Enclosed video shows this minor display bug. If you cannot see the top with the search filed, the string “E.T.” is being entered (without the quotes).

    Thanks,
    John Wiggins

    Hi Brendan,

Thanks for the prompt and detailed explanation. I put “encrypted” in quotes because it seemed a misnomer to me. (Did not realize the field was actually encrypted in Bento, assumed is was just being hidden.)

What we need is a way to obscure particular fields from screen and printouts, such as a password field. The database in question is already encrypted, and I was just asking for something to protect me from doing something stupid like printing out the info, or leaving it displayed on the screen. It is a minor thing that I could certainly live without if doing a “hide/display” of a field is difficult to implement without issues.

I do use your Auto-lock feature on Documents, and I must say it a pleasure to use such a well-engineered program. Tap Forms 5 is an improvement upon Bento, which has served me well for years.

I am new customer, just finally imported my old Bento Databases and am very happy with my new purchase.
If it is not already on your enhancement list, it would be nice to have a feature like old Bento’s “encrypted” field with which you could toggle the display of field contents both on screen and in printout.

    Thanks, John

    Hello Brendan, hello all,
User of Bento for years (and although still working, it won’t probably last ? and anyway no more improvements for long).
    So I just started on TapForms ? ? ??
After having done some bases patterned on my Bentos ones, I would like to build a budget monitoring and so, would be able to get automatically the balance after each operation (or group of operations): as a simple example, within a form that tracks all the money ins and outs of a single bank account, each record being one single operation (in or out) ; and more tricky, between several forms, each for one bank account.
I think that would need to make calculations between records of the same form, or between forms … so is it possible, and eventually how ?

Sorry if it’s a dummy’s question … ? (and probably I don’t understand enough about the calculation field, but although having struggling with it, I still don’t figure how to manage, and even if possible …

    thanks

    Hi Brendan,

I was probably one of the last “Bentohicans” until a few months ago.
I have been looking for a good replacement for Bento for a long time.
I doubted about Filemaker but that seemed too much for me.
I often ended up at Tap Forms but remained hesitant mainly because it lacked one function, namely the syncronization with contacts. It was convenient that contact information you entered in Bento, automatically appeared in the contact app.
In the end I switched to Tap Forms and I still have no regrets. The link to contacts makes things good and Tapforms has many more functionalities that saves me time.
Notwithstanding it would be nice if this function could be added in the future.
What is also a feature request is whether it is possible that a link to a document could immediately open the document instead of the finder window. These are gratuitous actions; Click to open the window, click on the document in finder, click to close finder, …
Otherwise nothing but praise for your program.

    Erik
