Hello Brendan, first of all congratulations for this app is actually very good. I was using Bento but I changed that I think is easier and more things I like.

Some suggestions if you’re so kind to accept.

The ability to choose that the week starts on Monday

the possibility of having the option to search in a pick list (useful for searching through many options pick list)

the ability to put an alert on the date field only. this would be very useful for a database of clients and follow up visits to alert you to visit on a particular date next.

thank you very much for your work

    Hi Brendan,

    Understood.

I’m afraid exporting CSV files still doesn’t work properly in Chinese using Encoding to UTF-16. Pls help. Thanks.

By the way, I’ve given up Bento and FileMakerGo finally, since I’ve successfully create a multi-media TAP FORM which can manage MP3 and MP4 easily. But I’m still looking forward to the next update of Tap Forms adding the features of Many to Many relationship(can define the primary and foreign key) and Desktop sync.

Pinch me! Am I dreaming? I’ve been waiting for the many-to-many feature since I first downloaded the app. After we get this feature, all I’ll need is a desktop version and I can say adios to Bento. Thanks Brendan!

    Hi Brendan,

Now that you have released the iPad version, what appetite do you have for a Mac version that can sync with iOS devices, or a web based version that will serve the content from an iOS device on the same wifi network and allow changes to be written back to an iOS device?

It’s interesting that there is a gap in the apps market for this. Bento is the only one with two way integration but it’s a pretty dire offering…

    Many thanks

Oh, but to answer your question about the many-to-many relationships… I see that Bento just added that to their app, so I’m taking a look at their implementation and may model mine after that. I’m not sure just yet. But anyway, it’s definitely something I will do and it’s high on the list. I just wanted to get Tap Forms HD out before I worked on other stuff.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

I’ve been using TapForms for about two weeks now and really like it. Just to check it out, I downloaded Bento 3 for Mac and the iPhone app, so far I really like that too.

I would prefer to use TapForms because I want to support Brendan and his efforts in developing what is already a fantastic app.

I see lots of forum entries by Brendan indicating that he has already added features, etc. that will be available in the next update. Before I get too far deep in developing a database using Bento, I’d like to know if a forthcoming update of TapForms will have the ability to use many-to-many relationships and how long it might be for that update to be released? I know that Brendan is spending a lot of time developing the iPad version, but I want to know if us iPhone users are being shelved indefinitely.

Your program looks like a winner in my quest for a high function PIM for the iPhone/iTouch world. I’m a long time user of HandyShopper (Palm and then MS Mobile universes) which, as its name suggests, was written for grocery shopping, yet it functions quite well for other database/info management needs. If you haven’t checked it out, you might find it to be a great opportunity as it is a freebie and is quite flexible, and most of its elements would surely have an obvious place within your app.

in HandyShopper I find that the info I manage in HandyShopper is lists of more layered data that appear on these lists in long-form as check boxes with many check box records spanning multiple pages, and this is very, very useful. Seeing and being able to choose/edit from those individual records is critical; an analogy would be that it is like peering into a file drawer and being able to see the whole drawerful of records, while also being able to peer at individual record pages in that drawer, and lastly being able to edit any of those records. Many of the PIM’s only allow 1 record to be seen at once, kinda like cover-flow. So far, I can’t tell how TapForms will appear.

I’m not clear if it is possible to create categories and subcategories within a record type / template. For example, again on the grocery list example, the template/database would be “grocery list;” the individual stores, the “aisles” or “departments,” and the actual product would be a subcategory of those. Given this, how can we make records that are sortable in this hierarchy?

Being able to arrange the layout of multiple data fields within a record, some of which onto a single line, a la Bento, would be visually effective and spatially efficient.

Having control of the graphic attributes of the records and forms would be great. This would be the colors and sizes of the fonts, backgrounds, boldness, pickbox/radio boxes and buttons.

Being able to grab/sort for multiple fields would be stellar. This includes being able to sort for checkboxes (checked versus unchecked (i.e., needed vs. unneeded items)), and then to be able to uncheck those boxes.

How can we produce printable “reports” of a data sort? A hardcopy grocery list for example.

I’m looking forward to putting this app to work!

Hi I was just wondering what the email capabilities are on this programme?. I want a database app for tracking a youth group membership but also a games database. Both these databases will require information to be emailed to others in formats they can open, is this possible with tap forms? The programme looks great, currently I have bento but it has no email capabilities and even the desktop version will try and lock me to bento users, i need greater flexabilitiy than that.

    Thanks.

    Thanks, Brendan. That was quick!

Having read feedback saying that your app was far better than Bento I sort of knew I must have been missing something fairly simple. My mistake. I had set up a field for ‘text’ instead of ‘note’ so wasn’t seeing any yellow screen. The note field type looks like it will do the job well (although formatting capability would be nice).

I think you’ve probably got yourself a new client.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Thanks so much for that! Yep, I missed the re-order bit but love it now.

The black screen now makes sense, no worries on that.

As to the recommendation for Tap Forms – it was in the reviews for the Bento app for iPhone apps, by someone calling him/herself HappyCatMachine…..review number 9 if you look at the reviews linked from the Bento app info page.

Thanks again for your input – I must say having recently moved from PC to MAC, and only a few days with an iPhone after years of Palms, I’m finding most of the reasons I held off being dealt with rather smartly! My killer database on the PC was ACT! and although I’m managing with address book on the Mac for now for my “customer relations” (gigs, press etc) I’m looking forward to finding something more like Tap Forms for my Macbook Pro. I’ve tried Bento on the Mac and though it’s OK, it doesn’t really grab me, and I can’t say why, it’s just not as intuitive as it needs to be for a musician who hates reading manuals…

So, not to put too much pressure on you Brendan but really looking forward to the release of the full-scale DB from you!!

    Cheers!

    Hello Scardanelli,

First of all, thanks for choosing Tap Forms! Where did you see the review of Bento which mentioned Tap Forms? Just curious.

When choosing a photo and you hit cancel and the screen goes black, it’s probably just that the navigation bar just hides itself. It does this after a delay. I suppose it shouldn’t do that if there’s no photo selected yet. I’ll look into fixing that. If you tap the black area anywhere, the navigation bar should re-appear and you should be able to tap the back button to get back to the edit record screen.

Your feature request to be able to re-order fields has been in the app since day one. Perhaps it’s not as obvious as it should be. Sorry for that. Anyway, you can reorder the fields easily by customizing the form and tapping and holding on the little grab bars to the right of each field name. The grab bars look like 3 horizontal lines. You’ll see that metaphor in a lot of iPhone apps to indicate the rows can be re-ordered.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks!

    Brendan

Just bought this lovely app and I’m very impressed. Glad I read about this on the reviews for Bento, which stopped me buying Bento (which I’m not that impressed with on the MAC anyway…). Very glad to hear there’s a MAC version of this coming eventually and that’s what convinced me to part with my money. Great though this app is it’s next to useless if you cannot use it on your main computer, where it’s much easier to enter detailed information.

Anway a couple of bugs – well one bug and one request I suppose.

When I’m in a record and go to add a photo, if I hit “cancel” the screen goes completely black and hangs sometimes. Have to hit the Home button and re-start Taps, but it starts without my passcode…

Feature request would be a way to re-order the fields. Having created an inventory for my musical instruments, I decided that some of the fields were better off further down the list, but cannot see a way to re-order them.

    Cheers!

I just downloaded this app (thanks Brendan for producing the lite version; the ability to test drive was the primary reason I went this your app instead of HandDbase or Bento etc) and unfortunately I think I’m hitting a limit.

I have a few text files (the simplest of simple databases, just two-column csv files) that I want to import.

The sticking point appears to be a matter of size. The largest datafile I have is also the first one I’ve chosen to import. (since I know it’s gonna take awhile, I want to let it go overnight…)

The file is 3.5 MB, consisting of 94,141 rows

    When I tap files –> filename –> Import button –> Import button…

the import starts, I see the count get up to 98/94141, and then the app crashes and I’m back at the home screen.

Am I hitting a known limit in terms of filesize?

    Version 1.8

    Problem 1: Backup

I had downloaded SyncDoc and backed up successfully first time. It was a test so in order to change the backup location I deleted the first back up and tried again in the same computer as well as in a different laptop. Although Tap forms can see the SyncDoc surver running, it wont backup. Selecting the server give a notice “Invalid Server The server selected was not a valid SyncDocs server”. Is there a solution to this problem?

Problem 2: Changes made in form

I wanted to make a new database based on the format of a existing one. I thought the forms behave as templates (it does but only when you make a copy) so I modified a existing frame by deleted some of the field and adding a few. The result is that I lost several fields in my previous database. I could not find or recover those data. Question–> Are those data are still in there or they gets deleted and cleared up automatically?

    A separate question:

Is there a way to get the whole database (not export)intact copied in my PC? If yes then is it possible to use a program like SQLite Expert (I am guessing that Tap Form database is based on SQLite)to edit and modify the database?

A Note: Despite my extensive search I could not find a easy to use database program like Tap Forms, Bento, Clarisworks for Windows PC. I have tried MS Access and others.

I have to chime in that TapForms is way better than Bento (though I don’t have the Bento app for Mac, just the iPhone). I have high hopes of TapForms replacing several of the list type apps on my phone – such as shopping, to do, etc.

If only Apple would open up the Calendar to input…..
