    Hi Bill!

Thanks very much for giving Tap Forms a try.

However, in a future update for the Mac, I will have a layout engine. But the good news is that’s optional. The default layout that you see now will still be there. You’ll just be able to add new layouts to your form as you wish. Development of that feature is coming along nicely, but I still have a ton more work to do on it, so don’t expect it soon.

    Thanks!

    Brendan

Hello Tapforms Community- I am a longtime filemaker pro and Bento user.

I run a business and really don’t want to play with my database much. I just want to use it.

When Filemaker killed Bento, I switch to Filemaker. BIG MISTAKE! I spent way too much time managing filemaker and too little time getting work done.

I gave TapForms a whirl and am very very happy I did. I thought I’d be put off by the lack of ability to create a layout… ya know what… I really like not having to worry about layout. Ends up, it was like candy in my database diet… unhealthy and non needed.

Now, after a whopping 20 min to get my huge bento data to Tapforms, I’m working again. It just works! This is compared to wrangling Filemaker for over 20hrs and it still didn’t do what I wanted.

I’m a happy new TapForms user.

Now that Apple allows older devices running earlier versions of iOS to download the latest version of an App that works with that installed version of iOS, has Tap Forms opted -in or -out of this feature?

I’m looking to replace Bento, but have some devices that can’t run iOS 7. Am I out of luck?

    Hi,

I have the Mac version, and the iPhone version.

The iCloud sync on the Mac “seems” to work: I can activate it, and the DB is indeed copied in /Mobile Documents…

    On the iPhone? No success.
Whatever I do, the sync remains blocked at “Upload 0.0%” (I have waited up to 30 minutes, and this was with the default DB and its 2 records!).
I have tried several times over 3 weeks and from 2 countries, so iCloud downtime/exotic ISP port filtering is not an option.

I have already read and tried solutions from https://www.tapforms.com/forums/topic/icloud-sync-iphone-with-ipad-problem/
My attempts include dozens of combinations of the below actions, in different orders:
    – Deactivating iCloud in Tapforms
    – Reseting iCloud in Tapforms
    – Deactivating iCloud docs sync in the phone
    – Restarting phone
    – Reactivating iCloud docs sync in the phone
    – Removing the iCloud account from the phone altogether
    – Re-entering my iCloud account in the phone.
    – Deactivating iCloud sync on the Mac + clearing the /mobile documents folder
    – Combinations of Wifi/Cellular on/off.

Any help is welcome, I have browsed 100 pages to find a solution, but I may have missed something of course!

Now Brendan, I don’t want to sound as an angry user. Really, I am not!
But I won’t loose any more time on something that “should just work” (e.g. full backups/restores of the phone). Plus, it is very likely Apple’s fault…

Here is my conclusion for the moment, as a user:
    – I still trust Tapform is “my” alternative for Bento, but I can’t use it yet.
    – iCloud sync – which I had never needed – turns out to be exactly as read too often: unreliable, non-transparent for developers and users alike, capricious.
So, this is just my opinion, but I trust many others will come: PLEASE think about supporting tried, tested and cross-platform sync methods: wifi, dropbox, webdav for personal cloud solutions…or messaging pigeons for all I care ;-)

    Best,
    Pierre

Tap Forms will use the Date Format and the Time Format specified with a space character in between to import Date & Time fields. Bento puts the letter T between the Date and the Time. Just replace the T with a space character in your CSV file and it should import.

    hi,
i also to need to import exported CSV tables from Bento.
on a previous post on this thread, Yogie wrote:
“again I used grep in Textwrangler and replaces my currency to look 1,123.00 and then the import brought the right results. So at the end from 1.123,00 € I changed it to look like 1,123.00 instead”

i may need to change date and currencies formats too. but i’ve no idea what “grep” is.
    i know TextWrangler though…
    please let me know.

    thanks

Former Bento convert here as well.

Although all my my databases are already imported – on the Import window, it would be nice if you could chose which fields to import or not import. Perhaps a future feature.

    thanks

    Hi Brendan,

I switched from Bento to Tap Forms.

I exported a Bento table to CSV in the table I do have a currency column and also date and date & time columns.

When I import the CSV the dates never get imported and the currency values do not have the amount after the decimal point.

I have set the date form to look exactly as the example records that are showing up at the import dialog.

I also tried to set up a Tap Forms form prior importing to have the column types the imported data is having but also this is not going to work.

    Cheers

    Hi Brendan,

I’ve difficulties to enter a currency value into a currency column.

Any time I try to give a value Tap Forms OS X says it is invalid formatted and offers to discard my entry (change).

When I copy & paste a value from an existing entry it works, I always need to change the value of course the amount I need it to have.

I have imported the Tap Form from a Bento CSV and set the column type to currency.

    Cheers

give tap form a chance. it´s worth any penny/cent! i´m a heavy bento (EUR 45,00) and filemaker user (regular version EUR 450,00, upgrade EUR 250,00) and I switched to TF. I like it so much, i´m really impressed about style, possibilities and easyness … and cheap! iCloud sync between devices is the burner.
Thanks, Brendan, you did a really good job!

Ya, sorry about that. Unfortunately it’s a very technical thing.

However, I do hope to write a Bento importer at some point. Can’t say when yet because I’m still working on iOS 7 updates and Mavericks updates for Tap Forms.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

I have read through the blog post describing how to import photos from Bento to Tap Forms but it is WAY too technical for me to attempt. Are there any plans to make this process a bit more approachable for the many Bento orphans who will be looking for a new home?

    Hi Pierre,

    Thanks for the great feedback.

    1. Yes, I’m currently working on a form layout engine. Multiple layouts per form. Lots and lots of work left to do on it though.

    2. I’ll see if there’s a way to do this on Mac. I know on the iOS version when you switch languages within the app, all you need to do is fully quit Tap Forms using the multi-tasking dock and then when you re-launch it, it will come up in the language you selected before. For now though, on the Mac, you can switch your language, launch Tap Forms, then switch your language back. So then Tap Forms will operate in one language and the OS and other apps will operate in the system language.

    3. Good idea. But I’d like to spend my time on finishing up #1 before I do anything like that. Submissions from customers are welcome and will be published on my website, just like the Bento photo importer article was.

    Thanks.

When the crash report says “Tap Forms.app” and something like “segmentation violation”, I’m reasonably certain it’s TF :-). As for the other things you mention, if the disc was at fault, I’d be seeing that elsewhere (Disk Utility verifies the disc successfully). A bad prefs file?…geez…gimme a break… Since prefs files are created by TF, a bad one would be indicative of another bug, no?

Besides, it wasn’t in the import from Bento…I had done that successfully awhile ago. I was adding a new field (a supported operation I believe).

With an indeterminate schedule for updates and bug-fixes (read some of the other posts in this forum and note how many say “I don’t know when this is coming) I just can’t take the risk with my data.

Are you certain it is Tap Forms and not a bad preference file or disk problems? I am new to TF as of a week ago. Played with it to get familiar. Then moved three Bento databases into TF during the weekend, added new features, and successfully synchronized to iPhone and iPad. Never did it crash. I am far happier than I ever was with Bento.
