On Bento, when linking two records, you had to add a relation field in both tables. So a project would show its client and the client would show its projects.

In Tap Forms is seems the ‘relation’ is a one perspective thing. I can link a client to a project. But the project itself won’t ‘know’ about the client and can be linked to another client, which in turn doesn’t know about that project, etc.

I hope I’m missing something… Otherwise this isn’t really a relation, specially not for many-to- many relations.

    Hi Linda,

What Bento calls Collections are Saved Searches in Tap Forms. However, I don’t actually import the collections into Tap Forms from the Bento library. That’s because we use different internal formats for the search rules.

So I’m not sure what it is you’re referring to.

Would you be able to send a screenshot of the Mac version and a screenshot of the iPad version to tell me what you’re missing from the Mac version on the iPad version?

I’m assuming to move your data from your Mac to your iPad you’ve enabled iCloud sync on both machines and clicked the upload to iCloud button on your Mac?

    Thanks,

    Brendan

Using both TapForms for Mac, 2.0, and the iPad and I imported a library from Bento that included several collections. The collections transferred to the Mac Version, but not on the iPad. Any suggestions.

    Hi GrooveAgent,

Thanks for your posting. Also thanks for your posts on the Bento forum. I only just saw them today when I was searching over there to see if Tap Forms had ever been mentioned.

You can do this, but at the moment it only supports a summation from a single field at a time. The results will display at the bottom of the list of records. It works with Saved Searches too so when you filter your records, it will show just the calculation that is appropriate for the set of records displayed.

Also, when you have a linked form it will display the calculation at the bottom of that too.

    See attached examples.

    Hey all,

I just started researching Tap Forms and was quite impressed with what the developer has done. Plus, the fact that he is a single programmer who takes pride in his product is refreshing compared to the corporate BS of Filemaker. Also it’s cool he’s from Alberta Canada which is where I’m from. ;) This is something I feel good about investing in – unlike Filemaker which slapped Bento users in the face by abandoning them. :(

The one thing that is keeping from making the switch from Bento is the ability to sum a field from a group of records. I use Bento as an invoicing system and would like to be able to add up the totals of my invoices. Allowing this feature in a saved search could be used as a reporting system. See attachment for an example from Bento.

Looking forward to eventually making the switch. Keep up the good work!

This almost gets me to a point bento was never able to do. I am wishing to print multiple records per page, and this will do so, but I am looking for a little more control in layout. Implementing the ability to print labels would solve my issue as I could repurpose the function to then print multiple records on a single sheet. If/when you implement the labels feature please provide the option to print the records either across rows or down columns. Heres to a happy and productive New Year.

    Hi Matt,

Ya, it would be too much word to link all the contacts up manually I’m sure. I’m sorry that Tap Forms doesn’t automate that for you.

If you could email me your Bento template for your contacts library then I could examine it and compare it with my export. I don’t need or want the data, just the template.

Maybe at the very least I could do a lookup based on first and last name and try to connect them up.

Also, you can add a new contact on the iOS version from within Tap Forms, but not on the Mac version. I don’t really see the need though since you can easily have the Contacts app open and you can add contacts there.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

Thanks for all of your help Brendan,

I love your app, especially what you’ve done for former Bento users. It would be the perfect replacement for me if I didn’t have to manually link all 5,700 of my contacts to records in TF, and if the fields in TF could update the corresponding fields in the Contacts DB.

Ideally, I would like to have one contacts DB that syncs across Mac Contacts (formerly Address Book), Google Contacts, and the TF record (as Bento does today on Operating Systems older than Mavericks).

That way one could update/add contact info on one (iPhone synching with Google Contacts, for example), and the change/add would propagate out to the others.

Your app would be KILLER if it could do that.

    Hi Matt,

When you reference a contact in Tap Forms, there’s a button to the right of a contact field which will display all the contact record details in a popover view. That data comes directly from the Contacts database. The same one used by the Contacts app. So you can edit the contact within Tap Forms and it will change the contact in the Contacts app too. This also works vice versa. But what Bento did was extract all the fields from the contact database, created new separate fields within Bento, then kept those fields in sync with the Contacts database.

Tap Forms is just referencing the contact in the Contacts database. It only displays the first and last name as copied in when you select a contact but the button to the right is what will show you all the contact details.

See attached screenshots. The first one is after you select a contact and then you view the contact details. The second screenshot is editing the contact from within Tap Forms.

As far as printing is concerned, you only have access to the first and last name combined field that Tap Forms copies in when you select a contact. I hope to improve that in a future update to let you get access to more contact details.

    Brendan,

The field labels are vertical and the fields are vertical. The fields are horizontal to the labels. In Bento, both the labels and the fields are horizontal.
    Thanks.

    Hello Hank,

Are you referring to the position of the field labels? You can just drag them around to position them wherever you want. But by default Tap Forms puts the labels on top of the fields during a Bento template import.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

I imported a template from Bento 4.1.2 into Tap Forms 2.0. The form in Bento had fields horizontally but the imported template has the fields vertically. Any means to correct?

Yes, I am using Bento in English…

    Static Dates:
Perfect, works perfectly fine with the Epoch Format -631152000 instead of 01.01.1950.
For everyone else: You can calculate Dates to Epoch Format here:

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Matt,

Unfortunately there isn’t a way to link to the contacts at the moment.

I just looked at Bento’s template export when exporting contacts, but it doesn’t seem to have any direct identifying information to link each contact to a contact in the Contact’s database. Well, other than the person’s name. I mean there’s no unique ID which would let me pick out the contact directly. They don’t even identify that the name fields are contacts. It just says they’re regular text fields. So it makes it more difficult to link to a contact. Tap Forms would end up creating separate text fields for each of your contact’s attributes (e.g. first name, last name, etc.) for at least all of the field types that Tap Forms supports. There are some that Bento supports that Tap Forms doesn’t (e.g. Address).

I wonder what would happen if you imported your template to someone else’s computer? Would the imported contacts be added to their contacts database? I haven’t tried that out.

    Thanks,

    Brendan
