Hello! We recently switched from Bento to Tap Forms. After wrestling all the images from Bento into Tap Forms using instructions provided here (thank-you!), we were eager to get started on the Macbook. Weirdly, whenever we take a photo for a record using the built-in iSight camera, the image is saved upside down and generates an upside down thumbnail! It appears to be only doing this with Tap Forms. Any ideas? I couldn’t find anyone else on the forum who has had this problem.

I’m also struggling with syncing the Macbook with the iPad. We do have a lot of records (over 20,000!). I’ve been following instructions via the forum but I still haven’t been able to sync for the first time. I thought maybe I should create a back-up from the macbook and restore it to the iPad, so there would be less uploading/downloading involved? I can establish a connection and both devices appear but the macbook information doesn’t appear to automatically download from iCloud to the iPad. The information is going to the cloud because I can see the mb increasing within the icloud interface.

    Any help is appreciated! Thank-you.

One of the problems is that the Movie Viewings CSV file contains the parent_form_id value for each record.

So are you suggesting then that the re-import will work better if I DELETE that column from the file you export? I tried removing that, and it doesn’t seem to make any difference for me.

In terms of my actual goal, this suggests that I shouldn’t try to generate this column for my Bento data, which is useful info. I’d wondered exactly how TapForms used that on import since there’s no reference in the parent form. (And presumably the parent_field_id would have the same problem.)

It makes sense that these UUID values would help in adding rows to an existing form, and I suppose that could apply when manually syncing data between systems; but in general, what’s the point in exporting them?

And since a Tap Forms Form file (.tff) will also include any linked forms embedded, then you need only export the parent Movies form.

While this is fine for the “dry run” where I’m trying to at least get a round-trip TapForms export to come back into TapForms intact, it doesn’t help for my real goal unless I can figure out how to generate a .tff from my Bento data. And getting my TapForms to TapForms experiment to work using techniques that I can’t apply to the Bento data doesn’t actually help me.

Bento started behaving unreliably on Yosemite. For some, it apparently doesn’t run at all. For me, it runs, albeit with some occasional odd dialog boxes or hangs. Clearly, it’s time to jump ship — even if it’s still not entirely clear there’s a safe place to land.

Most of my Bento forms imported into TapForms flawlessly, so thanks for that! However, the two main forms where I made use of Bento Simple Lists remain problematic. They’re too big to re-enter manually. I can’t shut down Bento for good without moving them. And I’ve still got no handle on how to do it.

I had written a Python script that would strip out the Simple Lists from a Bento CSV export into separate forms which, in theory, could be imported into TapForms. Having been unable to accomplish this, I’d resorted to round-trip TapForms export/import; and as recorded in this thread back in the Spring, I’d had trouble even getting that to work. But that was a demo version.

Now I’ve gotten around to trying again with the released TapForms 3.0.2; and it’s not working any better than it did back then.

I created a simple Movies form, with a linked Movie Viewings form. I entered two movies, more or less randomly, with one viewing each, and this seemed to be working just fine.

So I exported the parent (Movies), and TapForms created a Movies folder containing Movies.csv and Movie Viewings.csv. Each shows two records, as expected, with all the UUID columns apparently intact. In the attached archive file, you can see the Movies folder and the contents.

I then Deleted both forms from TapForms, and imported the Movies.csv parent.

First oddity: it imported the form just fine, but with no records. I have to import a second time to get the data.

Now I go on to import Movie Viewings. The form imports fine, with data. Now I go back to Movies, and edit the fields, selecting Movie Viewings form the Link to Form popup on the appropriate record. The embedded table appears; however, no matter what I try, I can’t seem to get it to actually find the data in in the child form. The table is empty. This obviously doesn’t do me any good; and if I can’t re-import exported TapForms data, it’s no surprise that I can’t make my converted Bento data work.

Note that if I export the imported data, the Movie Viewings.csv file shows no data, only the headings. Clearly the linkage didn’t work correctly. This is the Movies1 folder in the archive file.

So am I missing something, or does this just not work?

    Hi,

I am using Tap Forms since yesterday (before I used Bento).

I succesfully copied my databases from Bento to Tap Forms.
Now I wanted to copy 1 database (including forms, lay-out and some records) to one for next year. When trying, the program got stuck and I had to restart my Mac.

Now I want to restart Tap Forms and I am asked the “Tap Forms encryptie code”. When I enter my code (I am sure of the code that I used), I get the message “code onjuist” (wrong code).

How can I solve this and how can I make the copy-database?

    Hi,

We would like to add items to a drop down list.

When we are in edit form, the field is listed as a text field. However, it appears as a drop down with multiple options imported from Bento. Please see attached screen shots.

This is something that we were able to do in a previous version of Tap Forms for Mac, but maybe it moved.

    Thanks for your help!

I want to import records that are in CSV format. Normally with a database you get the chance on import to link the field that the csv data has with the field you want the data to go into on the database…. I cannot do this?

Assuming I overcome this issue, when i get another csv file to import into the same database how will I do this?

    In Bento it was easy…..

    Hmmmmmm

It would be a very nice and necessary improvement to TF.
I am aware of Brendans tough job on improvements for TF, but it is like the following formula:

IF (TF >> Bento AND (it is “the only mature replacement for Bento”)
    THEN
    (people will use it) AND
    (# of records >> 1000) AND
    (we-ask-for-more)

Sorry Brendan, but we we users are so enthusiastic that we go on asking for feature requests. Consider it as a huge “THANK YOU”.

    Hello Donna,

That’s just the icon that was assigned to the Bento library that carried over to Tap Forms when you imported your template. You can change that and assign icons to all your forms by clicking on the Form button in the Toolbar at the top of the window and then clicking on the grey square to the left of the Form Name.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

It’s interesting that TapForms treats Pick Lists as a global resource. In many ways, this seems good, and I like it.

However, I’ve imported a lot of old Bento forms, and ended up with a number of duplicated (or nearly duplicated) Pick Lists from Bento fields. For example, I have about 6 different Pick Lists with members of my family.

I’d like to be able to

    1. Determine where each Pick List is used
    2. Change all references from one Pick List to another
    3. (bonus round, since this is straightforward to do manually) Merge two Pick Lists so that the “target” contains all entries in two “sources” (one of which may be the target)

    Hello Leo,

I did love Panorama for years, since the time it was called OverVUE. Really amazing piece of software. But it has slowly been going in directions that do not interest me. And now it’s almost unusable on a recent Mac with the latest OS. I can’t use it with the Magic Mouse. And it can hardly keep two views in sync. So I’m getting a bit tired of it. I had transferred some of my databases to Bento and then that was abandoned. I still have a few databases in Panorama and like to keep it around if I need to “massage” some data. But I need my stuff on the iPad and iPhone so I have to find a new home for my databases. The ones that I had put into Bento are now in FileMaker. But I don’t like FM (neither the software nor the company) much. It’s not only the price, as I’m quite willing to pay for good stuff. Nor the learning curve, as there is ample documentation. The worst part is that it doesn’t really sync with the iThings. You have to transfer the databases by hand and sync the device. In 2014…

I find it really strange that there is no good, reliable database software on the Mac with effortless syncing. TapForms is nice and I had a look at it a bit over a year ago. It wasn’t stable enough for me at that time. Now, I’m trying it again, but I’m afraid my needs are still way over its head.

I do know what it means to develop software and I greatly admire Brendan for his work and support but I think you can only expect so much from a single person effort.

I have several forms set up and one, which I imported from Bento, has an icon that looks like a book next to the Form name (on the left of this screen shot, attached). Theme of the Form is Master volunteer. What is this? What does it mean? How does it work?

I’m another refugee from Bento plus a long time FileMaker user. This is a very nice app and synchs very nicely between my Mac, iPad and iPhone. And really fast! Now to my question. My wife, due to other considerations, must use a Windows PC.

For a long time, I have run a couple of simple databases on her PC and iPhone. With the advent of Windows 8.x, the old version of FMPro will no longer run. And I don’t want to spend a couple hundred bucks (the version is so old that I would have buy a full version) (Ouch!).

It appears to me that I could do just the iPhone version and let it back up to her iCloud without involving any kind of computer. That is my question. Is my assessment correct? If yes, are there any explosive devices that I should look out for? :)

LOL – I get it. OK, well for now I’ve just changed how I will use that field. I’ll search for only ones that DO have the checkmark and that will work to. I had wanted to add the checkmark after I mailed off their cards.

Another problem I’ve had relating to new fields is that if I enter data into them on my own layout, it doesn’t stick. If I enter it on the default layout, it’s fine. So for example on this new membership card field – I checked it on my layout, switched to the default layout and it was gone! Go back to my layout – gone too. Check it again on my layout, and this time it sticks fine.

My next request would be for a way to remove the checkmark from many records at one time – like we used to be able to do in Bento.

    Brendan,

Works for me. I’ve just completed importing all of my files from Bento. It was so easy to do. I purchased both the Mac and iPad versions last Saturday.

    Thanks,

    Hello Karen,

    1. You can import Bento files into the iPad version, but only in the CSV file format. So that would lose all of your relationships unfortunately. So you may want to import into the Mac version first since it has a dedicated Bento template importer which will maintain connections to your Related Data items. Just make sure that when you export your Bento template from Bento that you tell it to include all the data and select each of the related data libraries to include in the template. Tap Forms will reestablish the links to the related libraries (which I call Forms in Tap Forms).

    2. Tap Forms has Saved Searches which are essentially the same as Bento’s smart collections. However, they do not translate to Tap Forms during the Bento template import process, so you’ll have to recreate the saved searches in Tap Forms to match what you had going on in Bento.

You will need to upgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite actually. I would recommend upgrading to Yosemite myself. Tap Forms Mac 3.0.x is not compatible with Lion or Mountain Lion.

    Thanks!

    Brendan
