TF 5 discontinued?

    While working on my todo list and alarms, I rebooted TF and got the message that TF will not run on my system (MacBook Pro M1 14″, Tahoe) after ver 28 arrives. It sent me to this message from Apple.

    Rosetta is currently available for any Mac with Apple silicon, and it will remain available through the forthcoming macOS 27 — the next major macOS release. Starting with computers using macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. Find out which macOS you’re using.

    For optimal performance and future compatibility, you should update your Intel-based apps, plug-ins, extensions, and other add-ons for Apple silicon.

    Does that mean TF 5 will not run if I update to Tahoe 28?

    Hi Glen,

    Yes that’s correct. But if you’re using an Intel Mac it will still run forever. Tap Forms 5 is an Intel application. Tap Forms Pro is fully Apple Silicon Native and that’s where all my development work is going now.

    But macOS 28 is still more than a year away. macOS 27 is not even out yet. So there’s still time before you might want to upgrade to Tap Forms Pro.

    How do I know if I have an Intel Mac?
    I use a Mac Mini with an Apple M1 chip, does that make it Apple Silicon?

    I like your Tap Forms 5 database so much and don’t like the idea of having to migrate/learn a new user interface. Will you continue supporting Tap Forms5?

    Hi John,

    Yes, Apple’s M1 chips is an Apple Silicon chip. Your About Macintosh window would show Intel for the CPU if it was one of those. Apple M1 is definitely Apple Silicon.

    I will not be writing any more releases for Tap Forms 5. But I will of course answer support emails and forum posts about Tap Forms 5 forever. It’s just when Apple removes Rosetta from macOS 28, Tap Forms 5 will cease to function.

    You won’t have to learn a whole new user interface. It should be very familiar to you as a Tap Forms 5 user.

    And migrating is quite simple actually. Basically once you have Tap Forms Pro installed, it’s one click of a button called “Send to Tap Forms Pro”. Tap Forms will do the migration for you.
