I’m curious as to how the document wide spell check (Edit>Spelling and Grammar>Check Document Now) works. As I understand Tapforms, a document contains forms, forms contain records, and records contain fields. Using that definition, it was my expectation that “Check Document Now” would check all fields in all records in all forms contained in the document. This doesn’t seem to happen for me. Is there something I need to do to enable this? Or, a more succinct question, how can I globally check spelling for data already entered in Tapforms?

    Hi Gary,

The Check Document function applies to whichever field you have currently selected. A Note or a Text field.

It doesn’t apply to the entire document. It’s one of those features that’s built-in to the operating system. I didn’t explicitly add it to the menu or to Tap Forms. I’m not entirely sure how I would apply it to the entire document anyway. That would be quite complex as that function scans through a Text or Note field to check the spelling of a specific field. In a word processing type application where the entire contents of the document in within one scrollable area it makes sense. But with many forms, records, and fields, it doesn’t really make sense. So that’s why it’s limited to just the individual areas where text exists such as a Text or Note field.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

Thanks for the explanation. Since, I’ve stumbled onto a “work around” of sorts. If you export the database to CSV and open it in Excel (for example), it’s relatively easy to spell check all text. I suppose you could fix what needs to be fixed and re-import the data. I didn’t do that. I just made a note of any records that needed changing and made the change back in Tap Forms. Not elegant, but I managed to clean up an embarrassingly large number of errors.

    Thanks,

    Gary

If you were to spell check the file, then re-import, make sure you export the file including record IDs. That way Tap Forms would be able to match the existing records and update them instead of adding a new copy of the records.
