Slow Nearby Sync (I’m trying to migrate again!)

What does Tap Forms do when in Nearby Sync? I’m giving migrating to Tap Forms Pro another go but Nearby Sync seems incredibly slow compared to TF5. I’m syncing across my laptop, iPad, and iPhone.

FWIW, here’s what I did for migration:
1. TF 5 Mac —> TFP Mac
2. Sent the TFP database to iPhone TFP.
3. Backed up that iPhone database and opened it on iPad. (My iPad wouldn’t give me an option to open the database file in TFP though my iPhone did give me that option, hence trying it via a backup file.)
4. Turned on Nearby Sync on Mac.
5. Turned on Nearby Sync on iPhone, then iPad.

I’m also having trouble getting the sync to work period. Last night, Mac and iPhone were talking to each other. Today, I’ve tried too many things that I’m not sure what’s what and I should probably start over but I’m getting a bit tapped out on troubleshooting and might return to TF5 and try again in another time. Also FWIW, I had started off with trying to use Nearby Sync but the initial sync from my Mac wouldn’t complete overnight nor during the rest of the next day while I was out and about, so I gave up and am trying Nearby Sync.

Ha, it’ll only sync AFTER I say it won’t work. (But of course!) I started over and deleted Mac and iPhone. Then transferred the database from iPad > iPhone > Mac, then turned on Nearby Sync and have successfully made a change on each device that ends up on the other devices.

However, it is still supremely slow, even for changing a single number field. (As in I leave my desk and go do other things otherwise it feels like watching a pot of water while I wait for it to boil.)

I sync my iPad and iPhone when I’m done with my morning and evening routines and while I could technically just let them stay open and hang out after my evening routine, I don’t have that much time in the morning to make sure they’re synced up. Is this a case of my database being too large at 3.something GB before syncing, and 7.something with syncing? (Again the question arises of is there an upper limit to TF’s database?)

Hi Fern,

3 GB is a very large database to sync. But it can be done.

It should get faster over time though as it should sync just the changes. There’s a certain process called baselining that the sync framework I use does when you use Nearby Sync. That can take a long while initially, especially with such a large database. And it has to do that each time you add a new device too.

You can also set the Sync Delay to something smaller than 15 seconds, which is the default, if you like.

Thanks for the info Brendan, I had changed the delay to 5 seconds, though that had the side effect of hanging while I was trying to edit another field. I’m going to give Cloud+ another go and then decide if I’m unmigrating again until TF5 fully bites the dust!

Success!! I tried Cloud+ a few more times and it finally completed!! I have found some missing images so far but I’m just going to trawl database backups to find them and add them back. Anyway, syncing between devices is such a pleasure now. No unmigration this time!
