I want to use a counter that increments numbers as a field that is linked to another form. Can you give me an example?

    Hi Al,

If you add a Number field to your child form, then you can enable the Auto-Increment function on it to do what you want. So then whenever you create a new linked child record, Tap Forms will increment that Number field value. However, please note that the numbers will increment in a global fashion. That is, if you have Parent Record A and you add Child Record 1, 2, 3 to it, your Number field would be 1, 2, 3 for Parent Record A. Then if you added Parent Record B and you add Child Records 1, 2, 3 to it, the Number field would start at 4. So you would have Number values 4, 5, 6 for the 3 child records.

Hope that’s not too confusing sounding.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

How would tapforms know the linked fields; would that
Field type then not prevent you to to pick number field?

    Al,

What exactly are you trying to count or sequence? Maybe you can describe your use case in a little more detail.

Like Brendan said, if you have an auto-increment number field on your child form, then it will increment with each new record that’s created, regardless of whether you create a new record directly within the child form or indirectly through a parent form that links to the child form.

Concerning the linked fields question: The “Link to Form” field in the Parent is linking to records in the Child form, not a specific field in the Child form. It brings over all of the fields in the Child form, and displays them in a tabular format on the Parent form. You can adjust the tabular view to show only the fields of interest to you from the child records. So you can choose to view the auto-increment number field in the child record along with other pertinent fields.

    Hope that helps,
    Mike

When I add new fields to a form I noticed that the field does not immediately appear on the fields list after pressing ‘done’. But shows up afterward.

Do you have a detailed instruction book with examples on how to use tapforms?

Al, if you click on the yellow “Support” tab at the top of the web page, it will take you to an area that has FAQs and links to online documentation. Also, here is the direct link to the online documentation for Tap Forms 5: https://www.tapforms.com/help-mac/?l=en

Your reply posts seem to raise new questions or issues, but it is not clear if your previous concerns have been resolved and if you’re making progress toward your goal.

Also Al, you didn’t specify if you were using the Mac or iOS version. But from one of your responses it sounds like you may be using the iOS version. There was a bug in an older version that caused new fields not be shown right away in the list of fields in a form. I haven’t been able to reproduce that bug lately. If you close and re-open the document, the fields should display.

There are also tutorial videos for Mac and iOS here:
