Is there a ‘magic’ way to select all the elements in a custom layout and lock / unlock them all at once, rather than click on each one individually? Some of my layouts have many layers and its a bit of a pain to do it manually each time I want to make some adjustments to the layout.

What you can do is select the Layers tab, then select the first layout item, then press the spacebar to toggle the lock on the selected row. Use the arrow key to move down, then press the spacebar again. You can do this quite quickly. space arrow space arrow space arrow… and so on.
Long time before I tried it – the space bar just beeps at me?

Select the first object in the list of objects on the Layers tab. Then press the spacebar. I just tested it. It works still.
