    Hi Brendan

I am using TF Mac 5.1.1. (1645). I made some alterations to my file and then quit from the toolbar menu. No backup was made. There is only one backup file in the backup folder. Manual backup works fine? Any ideas?

    Cheers….

    Tony,

Maybe you just closed the document. MENU Tapforms- Quit and/or command-q works fine here.
Closing the document never made a backup file if I remember correctly.

Thanks both, I did use Menu Tapforms Quit and backup on quit is checked. Still no backup performed? The changes I made was to adjust some checkboxes from on to off. When I just added a new test record, I got a backup!?

I’m not sure why you’re not getting a backup when changing a checkmark field value. I just tested that and it does work for me. Maybe because I’m also syncing with that file and syncing causes the modification date of the database file to update of course. That’s what Tap Forms is looking for. It records the modification date of the document at open time. Then it compares that with the modification date of the document at quit time. If they’re different, then Tap Forms starts a backup. If the modification date hasn’t changed, then there’s no backup made.

So if I receive a sync from my iPad on which I have made some changes, the changes register on my Mac, I then use Quit TF from the TapForms menu drop down – NO backup is made – even with Save on quit selected?
This doesn’t seem quite right. You said TF looks for the modification date – so no changes made on the same day are backed up? Could TF check modification date and time?
Also Brendan, any luck with the cut off problem template I sent you?
    Cheers…

I just tested Backup on Quit via syncing. It works as expected. That is, a backup is made if I make a change on another device and then sync kicks in and updates the Mac version. When I quit the app, it makes a backup of the document. Make sure you’re quitting the app and not closing the document first.

Also I haven’t been able to reproduce the cutoff problem. Maybe it’s my MacBook Pro that’s causing that because my screen may be a lot smaller than your’s. I tried it with or without the main Forms List opened. I tried switching between layouts and quitting and relaunching with different layouts selected and each time it didn’t cut off. So I’m not sure what’s causing it for you. I was testing with the form template you sent me.

I may have been closing the document window just to get rid of it. I will leave it open from now on, or minimise it. Here is what I am getting now…
    1. Encrypted document opening
    2. Opens from document window as only one document – document window open behind
    3. Add record
    4. Manual backup
    5. Document window closes and reverts to password screen
    6. Reopen document – document window left open behind
    7. Quit from the TapForms drop down
    8. No auto backup even though there was that change
? What am I doing wrong? What I am trying to do is every time I finish a TF session, make a manual external drive backup and also an auto backup within the TF container structure.
    Cheers…

When you made the manual backup, Tap Forms no longer recognizes a change. So the timestamp of the file is the same because it was re-opened after the backup. Then when you quit, Tap Forms sees there was no changes and doesn’t do a backup. Try making a change, then quit. Don’t do your own manual backup.

Thanks Brendan, got it! However, I ALWAYS do manual backups. However, just had a thought, any reason why not direct TF prefs to save the backup outside the container and not bother with manual backups unless I really want one for some reason? I want a backup somewhere else than the Mac hard drive every time a change is made and this seems the way to go!

    Hi Tony,

Sure. Just click on the Backup folder on the General preferences and choose a new location for the backups for that document. That feature has been there since Tap Forms 5.0.

    Thanks!
