    Hello,

I was wondering if it was possible to format the location field so that it would export as eastings and northings instead of latitude and longitude?

At the moment I am using tap forms for iphone but hoping to soon upgrade to tapforms for ipad (when I get one).

    Thanks

    Hello lfoley,

I’m not sure what eastings and northings is. I’m just exporting the data that the Core Location framework gives me for someone’s GPS coordinates.

    Thanks,

    Brendan

Converting latitude and longitude to grid coordinates is not a straightforward process. Different countries use different coordinate systems based on various projections. It is also necessary to know the datum of the particular grid and sometimes the zone within that grid. The simplest universal system is latitude and longitude but you can convert these to coordinates using some online conversion calculators with the necessary inputs. I am glad Tap Forms does not try to use coordinates. They’re a pain….

And I would take Roo’s word as gold as he is the master of location data in Tap Forms. He’s been using it for a very long time. Thanks for the input on this thread Roo.

    Thanks Brendan and Roo,

I’m in Australia and we typically use UTM (eastings and northings) for gathering data in the field. That said, it’s no big deal because we usually use a differential GPS for field recording anyway. I was hoping I could use tap forms as a backup but it’s really not essential.

I am enjoying the app so far, thanks.

    Hi lfoley,

Roo is also in Australia I believe.

By the way, the iOS 7 update should be available shortly. It’s just processing for the App Store now. After that stage, it’ll be available to download.

    Requires iOS 7.

    Thanks!

    Hi lfoley,
At an early stage of mapping in Tap Forms, I used the Australian app Bit Map to collect coordinates as it can cater for both UTM coordinates and LatLon and then combined the export files from both Tap Forms and Bit Map to get the database I needed. Bit Map has now been superseded by Maps n Trax and is very well supported by the developer in Tasmania. Good luck
