Silvana HermannParticipantI tried to create a backup with TF4. Every time I tried it the backup crashes TF4. But the file was created properly (it seems to be).
After import in TF5 the data was fine but the pics are not there. So I tried to import the data from the scratch via .csv file (photos are within the same import folder what worked fine in TF4). The data were imported but the pics aren’t there again.
I read all the threads within the forum. But all the solutions belong to MAC and not to iPhone. Why was it necessary to save pics as .blob files. So I cannot do any work around to copy the pics manually into the appropriate folder.
With that lack the new version of TF is totally useless for me.

BrendanKeymasterHello Silvana,
If you would like to email me your backup file I can try the migration here and I could find out why it’s not importing the photos for you.
The photos are stored as .blob files because that’s how the database engine I’m using now stores them. With this way of storing the files, the files are more closely linked to the records that reference them now. I do understand that it makes it more difficult to work directly with the files on disk. Another reason for storing them this way is to support encryption. In the previous version of Tap Forms, when you encrypted the database, it only encrypted the actual database file. But with the new version, when you encrypt the database file, all these blob files that are your photos, file attachments, audio recordings, etc. are also encrypted. That was never the case before.
Thanks,
Brendan

Silvana HermannParticipantHi Brendan,
thanx for your instant reply. Sorry but I cannot send you the file because there are confidential data sets within.
The App (TF4) always crashes after around 35% (Step 2/5) on creating the backup file.
Maybe that the pics are not included at this time (step).Greets

BrendanKeymasterYa, that’s what I suspect.
There is another way to make a backup file.
- Connect to your device via iTunes.
- Click on your device.
- Click on Apps
- Scroll down to the very bottom and find Tap Forms. This is the iTunes File Sharing area.
- Click on Tap Forms and see the Tap Forms Documents area on the right. You may have to scroll back up to see it.
- Drag the TapForms_db.sqlite file to your Desktop.
- Drag the Photos folder and the other folders you see there to your Desktop.
- Select the TapForms_db.sqlite file and the folders that you dragged to your desktop.
- With all of them still selected, right-click on the selected files and select “Compress # items”.
- Name the backup file TF-Backup.zip
- Copy the backup file to the new version of Tap Forms using iTunes File Sharing.
- Tap the action menu button on the main Documents view.
- Tap the “Migrate Backup File” function.
- Tap on the Choose button to choose the TF-Backup.zip file you copied to your device.
- Proceed with the migration.
If I could plug your phone into my Mac and run Tap Forms on it, I know I could figure out why it’s crashing. It works for me, but I obviously have different amounts of data than you do, so it’s hard to tell what might be causing the crash.
Hopefully the above steps will get you going with version 5.
Thanks,
Brendan

Silvana HermannParticipantHi Brendan
thank your for that great support. I will try the steps above and will tell you how it worked ;-)October 25, 2016 at 11:21 PM #20175
Silvana HermannParticipantI’m on Win10 and I’m using 7ZIP for compression. Do I have to use a special kind of compression type oder method?

Silvana HermannParticipantYEAAAAH
It worked well!!!Thank you Brendan!!!!
But for future pic imports it would be great to have a simpler solution than to use an old version of TF as “gateway”.
Sincerely

BrendanKeymasterWell, in the most recent Mac version I added the ability to choose a folder of photos along side the CSV file you’re importing. Then while Tap Forms is importing the CSV file, it will look into the Photos folder you’ve specified to see if there’s a match for the value in the Photo field that you’re importing into. Just haven’t written it for the iOS version yet.
