Could we have horizontal and vertical guides that can be dragged from the rulers, as per Photoshop, for lining things up accurately?

In the meantime, make sure you’re taking full advantage of all the existing tools. There are horizontal and vertical alignment buttons in the Layout tool bar, which are greyed-out until you select two or more layout items, as well as Snap-to-Grid. Also, I’ve found it very handy to use the Position and Size numerical controls in the Layout Inspector panel.

You can also use the arrow keys to nudge objects round and use shift-arrow to nudge them further.
