Crash editing Notes and iCloud Sync with iOS 8

Hi,

I have an update which I have sent to Apple today that fixes the Note crashing issue after an upgrade to iOS 8. This happened due to a third-party library that I was using for translating speech to text. I have removed that third-party library from the next update and the crashing has gone away. Most devices now have Siri and are able to do speech to text natively. Also, the next update will require iOS 8 so most devices that support iOS 8 also support Siri.

As for the iCloud sync issue, Tap Forms uses an iCloud service called Documents & Data to sync between your devices. When a user upgrades to iOS 8, they have the option of upgrading their iCloud account to use iCloud Drive. iCloud Drive is a replacement for Documents & Data. When you choose this option, even once, Apple will do a one-time migration of your documents (including any files generated by Tap Forms), from Documents & Data over to iCloud Drive. They will also freeze syncing of your Documents & Data files on Mavericks and iOS 7 and earlier. This means that as soon as you upgrade to iCloud Drive, you will no longer be able to sync with the Mac versions of Tap Forms unless you're running the OS X 10.10 Yosemite beta.

Once OS X 10.10 Yosemite is available, sync will function again. Although you may need to logout of iCloud on all your devices and then log back in for it to start functioning properly.

You can read more about the iCloud sync issue from this TUAW article:

http://www.tuaw.com/2014/09/17/psa-do-not-upgrade-to-icloud-drive-during-ios-8-installation/

I'm very sorry for the crashing issue with the Notes field. I'm crossing my fingers for a speedy review process for this next update.

Thanks!

Brendan

So we’re still waiting. I know this issue was originally reported and posted BEFORE 09/29/2014. I don’t understand why the date has been changed from the original posting date. The only work-around that I have found is to make the changes in the Notes field on the OSX version on the Mac and then do a sync back to the iOS device. If this has been fixed, why hasn’t shown up yet for updating?

      Hi Manu,

That’s very strange. I just tested that. I deleted my development version of Tap Forms from my iPhone 4S, then went to the App Store and downloaded another copy of the iPhone version of Tap Forms (not the Lite version). It works fine out of the box. No freezes.

Is there something different about your device from normal? Is it jailbroken? Although I don’t know if there’s an iOS 8 jailbreak though.

    • Brendan says:

Can you try turning on Airplane Mode and then check to see if you still have the problem? Tap Forms is probably downloading your documents from iCloud, which is causing the performance problem.

    • Brendan says:

Hello Manu. If you let Tap Forms sit for 10 or 20 minutes, are you able to work with it after that?

If you would like me to send you a beta of the next update which may fix this problem, I would be happy to.

If I can solve the problem for you perhaps you can update your App Store review? I would really appreciate that.

      Thanks!

      Brendan

Hi. I updated it and I am happy that the note field works again but now suddenly the calculation doesn’t work anymore. Example:[Dinero puerta año pasado]+[Dinero barra año pasado ] normally it would count how much the total is. Now it stay in blank. I use like 10 calculations in my daily report and never had problems until today after the update. Hope there is a simple solution for this. Greetings. Peter

Hello Brendan..i turn the airplane mode off and i dont have this problem..what should i do now?
    Greetings from Manu

I think the issue is that Tap Forms is downloading photos in the background but causing this problem. If you just let it sit there for a while then it may correct itself. I am working on a fix for this.

    Hi Brendan,

after updating to 3.9 on my iPhone 5 with the latest iOS and no iCloud drive i tried to sync/upload to iCloud. But it only get the window “checking iCloud” after a few minutes, tp closed.

On my mac i’m using TP 2.2.3 on 10.9.5.

    with kind regards
    Mark

      Hi Mark,

Some other users are having this trouble too, but not all of them. I’m still trying to figure out what the problem is. I cannot reproduce it on any of my devices. But I’m going to keep trying. For now I would suggest just letting Tap Forms sit running for 20 or 30 minutes without going to the iCloud screen and see if that makes it better. I’m working on a fix.

      Thanks,

      Brendan

    • Brendan says:

      Hi Mark,

Can you please contact me via email. I have an update I’d like it if you could test to see if it fixes this “Checking iCloud” issue.

      Thanks,

      Brendan

The problems is the Decimal. When I put 1300 euro than the calculation is ok but when I put 1300,50 euro then the calculation field is empty. In the option field the number is with 2 decimals.

I don’t know if this is related but since updating to iOS 8 I hadn’t been able to use the tap forms lite version on my phone. It comes up with “record editing disabled”. I also found it happened on the pro version as well. Today after a lot of looking through the setting I found both versions I discovered why. For some strange reason after the os update it had turned off the editing mode in both versions. Was this a security change during the upgrade of the iOS intended or just something that happened to me

While I don’t envy you at all for the work that is needed to keep TF operating with all iOS updates that happen, I do want to say I love the app and it’s incredible functionality! I guess I’m locked out from being able to sinc between my Mac and iPad until the update, but very impressed and happy so far!

    Cheers and good luck!!

    • Brendan says:

      Hi Rob,

Thanks for your understanding. It seems that every 6 months developers have to start preparing for the next update. It takes about 6 months to work out all the kinks with new OS version updates and then Apple releases a new one which starts the process all over again! I would actually prefer 1.5 years between OS version updates.

So yes, sync will work again when you upgrade to OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I’ve been using it for a while and it works well.

      Thanks!

      Brendan

    Hi,

short note about an interesting syncing problem. While TF on 5S with iOS 8 and on Mac with Yosemite beta are syncing wonderfully my iPad with iOS 8 stucks when checking the iCloud. No more action then, only killing of the app possible.

But still I appreciate your app, good work.

I have a big problem with iCloud sync. Until today, I had a MacBook Pro running Mavericks, an iMac running Yosemite and an iPhone 5S and an iPad 3 running iOS 8. I purposely did not upgrade to iCloud drive until all devices were on either Yosemite or iOS 8. The iMac was not syncing until I enabled iCloud drive. I enabled it this afternoon. The sync then broke completely. I have reset iCloud sync at least 3 times. The iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro APPEAR to be syncing as one entity and the iMac as a completely different entity. The iPhone has no data in the Tap Forms library. The other three devices have a mixture of all the correct content. I would be OK with losing a few records because the work is not tedious. Please help me fix this.

    • Brendan says:

      Hi Jordan,

You should logout of iCloud and log back in.

Please see my forum post about this:

      Thanks!

        Brendan,

Approximately how long will it take for a database with approximately 600 records, most of them with hi-res photos to re-upload. I worry I am not giving it enough time.

        Jordan

        • Brendan says:

When you logout of iCloud and log back in, OS X and iOS can take a long time to re-sync all your data that’s in iCloud. So give it some time. But syncing 600 records itself shouldn’t take much time. But the hi-res photos will take a while, especially if there’s 600 of them.

          • Jordan says:

            Brendan,

I have signed out of and back into iCloud on all of my devices. The iPad, MacBook Pro and iMac are “semi-communicating” with each other and the iPhone is still not picking up any data. They are all on the device sync list however. I have also reset the sync and power cycled each device several times.

        • Brendan says:

You might want to just give it some time then to catch up. If you’ve signed out and signed back in again, it can take quite a while for everything to be in sync again. Then sync in Tap Forms should perform better. All Tap Forms is doing is writing files to your iCloud folder. It’s up to iCloud to sync those files when it has a chance. It’s not always right away. Although I have found that iCloud Drive syncs much faster than the old Documents & Data system ever did.

  17. Jordan says:

    Brendan,

It appears the data is syncing but I might have a few discrepancies across the databases. I am leaving town for the remainder of the week and won’t be near my iMac. If I can have it checked for accuracy I will let you know…

Please can you help me? I’ve been using tap forms for years on my iPhone. I now have an iPhone 6. Today, my phone crashed while I was using tap forms and now when I try to get into it it asks me for an encryption key, which I’ve never had to put in before. I can’t get into any of my forms! How can I find out what the encryption key is?
