Tap Forms HD Sneaky Peak!

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Hey there,

Long time no chat. Anyway, just thought I’d throw up a sneak peak at a couple of the screens in Tap Forms HD:

There you have it!

Tap Forms HD coming to an App Store near you.

I still have a bunch of work to do on it so it’s not ready yet, but I thought you’d probably waited long enough to get a glimpse of this awesome app. It’s taken me a long time to get it right. I know you’re going to enjoy using it as much as I have enjoyed building it.

Thanks!

Brendan

Tap Forms 1.9.12 Released

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Hey there everyone,

Earlier today Tap Forms 1.9.12 was released.

This update fixes the crash viewing encrypted fields. It also adds Arabic translation.

Currently I am working on the iPad version but I managed to add a couple of new features (coming in version 1.9.13). The first is I updated the Number field type to support auto-incrementing. You’ll be able to turn auto-increment on and off and also set an increment amount. The start value will take the value of the Default value and then each additional record that’s added will have the increment amount added to the default value. So in this case, the Default value is doing double-duty.

I am also working on adding an aggregate calculation function to a Form. This will enable you to see the sum, average, minimum, or maximum of a specific number field in your form. The value will be displayed at the bottom of the record list view. It will be fairly straight forward to use. Just pick the number field and then pick the aggregate function. That’s it! Easy peasy!

For example:
* Total (Cost of Item): $459.99
* Average (Cost of Item): $200.99
* Minimum (Cost of Item): $10.55
* Maximum (Cost of Item): $350.69

Where “Cost of Item” is the name of the number field you selected.

That’s it for now… back to work!

Another day, another update [Updated]

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Hey there,

Right after Tap Forms 1.9.11 was approved, I got feedback that it was crashing while trying to view encrypted records. I have since fixed this and submitted an update again to Apple two days ago. I do hope they will approve it quickly.

Again I’m sorry for the crashes. This only affects records which have encrypted fields.

Also new in the 1.9.12 update is Arabic translation.

[UPDATE: September 13th, 2010]

Apple has just approved the update to the full version. Still waiting the lite version to be approved. So look for 1.9.12 in the App Store to arrive shortly.

Thanks,

Brendan

Emergency Update 1.9.11 in the pipeline

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Hey there,

I am very sorry, but the 1.9.10 update has clearly caused a lot of crashing to happen in the app. I believe I have fixed all the crashes now in development. It’s operating smoothly again and I am just about ready to release my 1.9.11 update to Apple. I just need a little more testing to make sure.

I’ll see if I can get Apple to expedite the approval process for me this time since I know there a ton of you out there that rely on Tap Forms every day.

Sincerely and very sorry,

Brendan

★ Improved look of web server Files upload page.
★ Improved performance of pick list reordering with large pick lists.
★ Added Russian and Turkish localizations.

Thanks,

Brendan

Time Zone Problem with Date & Time Pickers

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Hey there,

I’ve recently received a few reports that the time in the date picker is not displaying correctly in my most recent update of Tap Forms. For some unknown reason in my time zone, the problem never showed up. After receiving these reports, I switched to a different time zone and now I am able to see the problem.

The problem is that the time picker shows a different time than the time displayed in the black band above the time picker.

I’ve found a way to fix the problem and I will now need to submit a new update to Apple so that you will be able to have the fix. I hope to get a new update out to Apple for approval within the next couple of days. Since I’ve been working on the iPad version, I want to make sure that I haven’t broken anything while working on that.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

New Dropbox upload, iOS 4, and File Email features released

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Hey there,

Apple has approved my 1.9.8 update to Tap Forms. The main new features are:

  • Update for iOS 4 to support multi-tasking and Fast App Switching
  • Dropbox uploading. From the Files tab, you can now upload a file to your Dropbox account
  • You can now download files from any of your Dropbox folders, not just the top level of your account
  • Added emailing of files from the Files tab

So far the full version has been approved and should be in your App Store Updates right now. The Lite version has not been approved yet.

Hope you enjoy this update!

iPhone OS 4 (iOS4) update for Tap Forms in the queue

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Today I have finished working on a quick update to Tap Forms to make it more compatible with iOS4. The main area of focus was on the new multi-tasking features of iOS4, specifically with the Fast App switching capability. Now, on devices that support multi-tasking, Tap Forms will not have to re-launch fully when you switch to another app and go back again. iOS4 will preserve the current state of Tap Forms and bring you back to the same place you were at when you switched to another app.

Upload to DropboxAlso in this update is a fix for the Dropbox issue where you could only download files from the root of your Dropbox account. And as an added bonus, I also added the ability to upload any file in the Files tab of Tap Forms. To facilitate this change, I modified slightly how you view, import, and upload files to Dropbox. Now, instead of being presented with the “View” or “Import” dialogue when you tap on a CSV or TXT file, I now just show you the selected file. To activate the Import or Upload to Dropbox function, simply tap the detail disclosure icon at the right of any file name. That’s the blue circle with the chevron (>) inside it.

I have also improved memory use when importing larger files. Previously Tap Forms would use more and more memory as you were importing a file. Now the memory is cleaned up as the file is imported so hopefully you should be able to import larger files now. I imported a file with over 12,000 records without any troubles on my iPhone 3GS in testing without troubles.

I should be releasing this update to Apple for approval in the next couple of days. I’m just awaiting some returns for translations from my translation team. Once they are back, I will submit this update to Apple. If I don’t receive the translations back in the next couple of days, I’ll release to Apple anyway and then release a followup update with the updated translations. So far I have English, Dutch, German, and Japanese.

There’s one more thing I wanted to talk about. Unfortunately due to an incompatibility with the WebDAV software I had licensed and iOS4, I have had to remove WebDAV functionality from Tap Forms. The WebDAV functionality inside Tap Forms was licensed from a company called Soft Bump Technologies. The library was called iSharingWebDAV and was very good software. The developer was very helpful in fixing any bugs I found with the software before I released it to my customers. But a while ago he sold the software to an unknown company who unfortunately wanted it taken off the market. I guess they didn’t want any other developers to have a WebDAV server in their software without forcing them to re-invent the wheel on their own.

Unfortunately building a WebDAV server from scratch is not something I have the time to do. When I upgraded to iOS4, I was unable to compile Tap Forms with the iSharingWebDAV library included in the project. If I had the source code to the library I could have fixed it in about 2 minutes. But unfortunately I don’t have the source code. I tried contacting the original developer, but he has not replied to any of my emails since last year. So unfortunately I have had to remove this feature.

But all is not lost as there are plenty of ways to get files into and out of Tap Forms now. One of the features provided by the iSharingWebDAV library was a built-in web server which would show you a web page for uploading files to and downloading files from Tap Forms. Fortunately there is an open source project called CocoaHTTPServer which I have used to re-implement the web server feature. So you can still use your web browser to connect to Tap Forms to upload your files. And with the current FTP and new Dropbox integration, you still have 3 different ways of getting files into Tap Forms.

Now… back to working on Tap Forms for iPad! :-)

Thanks for your time!

Tap Forms Lite 1.9.7 Approved and Ready for Download

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Well, oddly enough, I submitted the full version of Tap Forms about 5 minutes before the Lite version and now the Lite version has been approved first. Apple hasn’t begun to review the full version yet either. I’m still waiting. Hopefully it will happen soon. When it does, I’ll keep you posted.

You can always download the lite version to play around with the new features. Keep in mind the Dropbox integration in the Lite version isn’t fully activated until you upgrade to the full version using the In-App purchase option on the Tools tab. So if you already have the full version, you’ll just have to wait a little longer for that. You can use the Dropbox feature to login or create an account and view your files list; you just can’t download a file without the upgrade.

Thanks,

Brendan
